  About BRGS history|amenities|pastoral system|memorabilia

At the heart of the school is the main hall, situated in the mainschool building and typical of so many schools built at the turnof the century with its adjacent classrooms and surrounding balcony. The walls are adorned with portraits of past headmasters and honours boards.

Generations of pupils have
attended assembly here and imbibed the fine traditions of the school: Armistice Day remembrance services, speech days, sports reports, music and drama productions, senior citizens’ parties, sixth form charity events, year 7 ‘sleepovers’, the annual Christmas celebration, reunions and art exhibitions.
It is a functional rather than hallowed ground however, as it is the social meeting place for hundreds of pupils every day. The main building houses the science laboratories, the music suite, design and technology workshops, a food technology room, ICT rooms and the dining room together with many general classrooms which are arranged as far as possible into departmental suites. The majority of rooms are equipped with inter-active whiteboards and ICT facilities.
The school's Reception /General Office and the majority of our management, administrative and technical staff are also based in the main building.

There are several newer buildings on the school site: the Philip Lane Clark Building, named after the headmaster who retired in 1988, was opened in 1991 on the opposite side of Glen Road to the main buildings. It houses several classrooms used mainly for sixth form teaching along with the school library. The Art Block was completed in 1996 and the Newchurch wing in 1999.

The school’s sports facilities were considerably enhanced in 1998 with the addition of an all-weather pitch to complement the existing grass pitch. The Glen Playing Fields on the far side of Bacup Road also belong to the school. The main school games for boys are football and basketball whilst the girls play mainly netball, hockey and football. In the summer, both boys and girls take part in athletics.
David Heap Sports Centre
Due to the generosity of alumni, parents, statutory funders and friends of the school, BRGS reached its £1.3m target to build the David Heap Sports Centre which was named in memory of our Chairman of Governors and was opened officially by HRH The Earl of Wessex in October 2005. The Sports Centre includes a dance studio, fitness suite, changing rooms and two classrooms. It has already been the venue for the Guinness World Record in endurance netball when a squad of BRGS netballers played for 55 hours and 20 minutes.
