  Departments - Dance AS/A2
INTRODUCTION
This course, offered in conjunction with Rossendale Dance and Drama Centre, is an exciting and enjoyable one with dance and choreography at its heart!

Throughout the course a range of dance styles/genres will be explored but the focus will be on Modern/ Contemporary/ Jazz Dance. For practical classes light, loose leisurewear should be worn with jazz shoes.

No prior formal dance training is necessary. However, an interest in the subject coupled with some evidence of potential, will be expected. Open to both sexes, the "AS" course comprises 3 units:

AS LEVEL

UNIT 1:
50% Choreography and Performance (20% of total A Level marks).
In this unit you are given the opportunity to choreograph and perform a 2-3 minute solo dance and produce programme notes to accompany your performance. A visiting examiner will assess your work.

UNIT 2:
Coursework Essay (15% of total A Level marks)

Here you will produce an essay of approximately 1500 words on the Solo Choreography presented in Unit 1. Content should include choice of movement, choreographic devices, description, floor plans etc. The essay will be marked by your teacher and moderated by the exam board AQA.

UNIT 3:
Understanding Dance (15% of total A Level marks)

In the 2.5 hour written exam, you will respond to both short answer questions and structured essay questions. The focus will be on your experience in training, as performer and as audience, and will draw upon your knowledge of one set work.

A2 LEVEL
At "A2" three further units are available on Group Choreography, Performance and Appreciation. More details are available on request.

A Level Dance is an enjoyable, challenging and stimulating course; a valuable complement to other A Level subjects or as a stepping stone to further vocational or academic study in Dance, Theatre or Performing Arts.
