INTRODUCTION
German is taught to pupils from the beginning of Year 7. We have
links with German grammar schools near Heidelberg and all pupils
will have the opportunity of making contact with pupils from Germany.
At present BRGS pupils from Year 9 travel out to Heidelberg on
an
annual exchange, spending ten days with German families, getting
to know the people and country, and making active use of the language
they have learned in school.
COURSE OUTLINE FOR YEAR 7
Year 7 pupils aim to master the elementary linguistic skills and
background knowledge necessary for visiting a German speaking
country.
They learn to give and interpret information working within the
following topic areas: personal information, finding the way,
food
and drink, travel and shopping. They become familiar with the present
tense of German verbs, German word order rules and the rudiments
of basic grammar.
HOMEWORK
Two 20 minute homeworks are set each week: one will usually be
a written exercise and the other may consist of learning vocabulary
or preparing material for the lesson.
HOW PARENTS CAN HELP
A positive home attitude is of immense importance to learners
of a foreign language. Please keep an eye on the marks your child
achieves and watch out for any downward (or upward!) trends. Encourage
your child to ask questions. You can help your child by testing
him/her when vocabulary has to be learned. Please always insist
on a good standard of presentation.
Coursework books will be supplied by school, but many of our pupils
find in addition to this that a small pocket German-English dictionary
is useful. We would recommend that pupils buy a copy of the Collins
'Easy Learning'German Dictionary.
