ICT
at Key Stage 3
Our aim is to ensure that by the
end of year 9 all pupils can use ICT securely, creatively and independently,
are confident
enough to keep their skills up-to-date and are able to reflect
critically on their ICT experiences. Pupils develop their knowledge
of the technology they use and they also learn the technical terms
associated with the ICT facilities that they are using. In ICT,
pupils will develop a vast range of skills that will empower them
and successfully prepare them to use ICT in a wide range of situations
and that will be a valuable asset whatever they choose to go on
and do. It is expected that pupils are able to demonstrate high
level ICT skills in all areas of the curriculum. We are proud that
at Key Stage 3 & 4 we can offer pupils discrete lessons of
ICT.
In year 7 pupils begin building up their portfolio
of skills by working on small projects that help them to gain
confidence in using a range of software packages including word
processing, spreadsheets, data handling, presentation, web publishing
and computer control. The year seven schemes of work for ICT
follow the ICT national strategy (Year 7 to 8).
In year 8 pupils become more independent learners
of ICT. They follow a resource called ICT Matters where
they use ICT to organise and run a fictitious music festival.
Higher
level skills in word processing, data handling, spreadsheet modelling,
presentations and computer control are developed and are put
into context so that pupils can appreciate how their skills can
be use to solve tasks relating to realistic problems in wider
world.
During their study pupils will also become
confident in using a virtual learning environment called “Moodle”.
Pupils are provided with their own logging in details so they
can access this from home at and at school. They are expected
to develop their ability to use this system to upload work, participate
in activities set for classroom and home use and to communicate
effectively with other pupils and teachers within the school
In year 9 pupils undertake the Short GCSE ICT course. Please
see ICT at KS4 for more details.
Homework will be set on a regular basis
(following the homework timetable) and some work may involve
using a computer. It is the department’s policy to expect
all pupils to be able to carry out this work. Where facilities
are not available at home, pupils are expected to make the
most of ICT at BRGS before and after timetabled lessons.

Computers at BRGS
