ICT
at Key Stage 4
As part of our Key Stage 4 ICT provision, all year 9 pupils will
follow the OCR GCSE short course in ICT.
During this course pupils will complete two
pieces of coursework (worth 60% of the final grade). The work
will give the pupils the opportunity to demonstrate the skills
and understanding they have developed in years 7 and 8 and to
use these to independently solve an extended problem or task.
Pupils will rely heavily on our virtual learning
environment “Moodle” to upload and submit ongoing
coursework. This system will also be used by teaching staff to
monitor progress and regularly keep pupils informed this progress.
Pupils will also develop their theoretical
knowledge of ICT (worth 40% of final GCSE), where they must demonstrate
understanding of computer systems, hardware, software, advantages
and disadvantages of ICT and social and moral and ethical issues
relating to the use of ICT in the real world. Their knowledge
in these areas will be developed through planned lessons that
will take place throughout course.
Pupils are expected to take full responsibility
in ensuring that interim coursework deadlines are met every time
and that the work is of the highest standard. Homework will still
be set according to the homework timetable for year 9, but during
the coursework period pupils are expected to use this time to
make progress with their projects. Lunch time support sessions
are run throughout the year to help pupils make sufficient progress.
Pupils in years 10 and 11 do not study
ICT as a discrete subject however we do offer an optional subject
called Computing Plus. Pupils who opt for this course will,
in year 10, have an opportunity to study the remaining core
units of the GCSE ICT course so that they achieve a Full course
GCSE qualification. In year 11 they will go on to study Computing,
qualifying for an AS level in Computing.
