Information for Parents about Music GCSE Coursework


year 10
There are 2 coursework elements in GCSE MUSIC

PERFORMING
Either:
Performing on 2 instruments
OR:
Performing on one instrument plus one instrument in ensemble

Students are expected to
• Receive tuition on at least one instrument
• practise regularly on their main instrument, building their repertoire of music for performance
• participate in ensemble activity throughout the course – instrumental and/or vocal

Assessment:
• ONCE TERMLY, a solo piece will be recorded and formally assessed
• ONCE TERMLY, an ensemble / second instrument will be informally assessed / monitored

COMPOSING

2 pieces of composing will be submitted by April.

Composing is a complex process involving:
• Formulation and assembly of ideas and resources in a task related to the areas of study
• Notation, rehearsal, performing and recording of composition
• A full commentary outlining the process of composition using appropriate analytical vocabulary

Below are the deadlines for Year 11 coursework submissions 2006-2007.


Students must complete two compositions and submit them by the due dates. It is important that students follow the ‘details’ section in the table below, as this tells them where they should save their Cubase / Sibelius / Word files, and ensures that the correct version of their work will be marked.

Students will also perform 3 pieces; one ensemble, one composition performance and one final performance. Details of these dates are included in the table below.

December GCSE Performance Examination:
7.5% of the final GCSE Grade
Perform a piece with one or more live players, lasting at least 2 minutes long.

You must submit a copy of the sheet music/drum/guitar tab before this performance. It must be labelled with your name, candidate number and the name of the piece and the composer.

FINAL PERFORMANCE EXAMINATION: 15% of Final GCSE Mark Perform one piece lasting around 3 minutes AND Perform your Composition No. 1.
