
INTRODUCTION
The course is suitable for any student interested in sport or who
wants to have a career in the sport/leisure industry. The theory
covers a wide range of topics including anatomy and physiology,
acquisition of skill, contemporary issues in PE, psychology of
sport,
exercise physiology and comparative studies (sport in USA, France
and Australia). The practical involves experiencing a variety of
sports but actually being assessed in two, one game and one individual
activity.
The course is 70% theory and 30% practical.
AS Course (Year 12)
The AS involves the application of physiological and psychological
knowledge to improve performance, contemporary studies in P.E.
and practical performance in two activities - usually one games
and one individual activity.
Paper 1 - 1 hour 30 minutes.
Factors affecting performance - anatomy and physiology, acquiring
performance and teaching movement skills.
Paper 2 - 1 hour 15 minutes.
Contemporary Studies (issues such as drugs, women in sport, sociology
of sport, leisure, excellence in sport and mass participation).
Practical
You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate certain skills
in your chosen activities and also your ability to observe, evaluate
and improve skills.
A2 Course (Year 13)
A2 Level involves historical or comparative studies, psychology
of sport - exercise and sport physiology and practical performance
through competitive situations. Again you do two practical activities.
Paper 3 - 1 hour 15 minutes.
Socio-cultural and scientific areas. Sport in Australia, France
and USA and psychology of sport.
Paper 4-1 hour 30 minutes
Exercise physiology and a general synoptic assessment based on a
contemporary issue.
Practical
You will be assessed on your performance in a competitive game and
against set criteria in the individual activity. You also have to
observe and evaluate performance.

Higher education and career opportunities:
The whole course offers an experience which is valuable
as an end itself, as a foundation for study at degree level and as a means of
personal development. The course would be useful for a wide range of careers
such as teaching (primary and secondary), the armed forces, journalism, sports
therapy, psychology, leisure management, sports science and sports medicine.
