COURSE OUTLINE
The course is designed to encourage our pupils to develop an interest in Science, an enquiring mind and the investigative skills necessary to appreciate the position of science in the world we live in.

Legislation places science at the core of the school curriculum. The course of study in Years 7 - 9 ensures that the school meets all of the National Curriculum requirements for science at Key Stage 3. Topics covered in Year 7 include: investigating science; making and using materials; energy; the variety of life; forces; acids and alkalis; growing up; magnetism and electricity; matter; the environment; rocks; and sight and sound. These topics will be taught using an integrated approach. The major resource book available to pupils is Hodder Science A, B or C as appropriate.

HOMEWORK
There will be at least one written science homework per week arising from the topic being studied at the time.

TESTING AND ASSESSMENT
Practical work will be assessed during class-room activities. Each topic will be completed by an end of topic test. School examinatons will assess all of the year's work to date. Results will be reported back to parents once a year as part of the whole school reporting system.

MARKING
Homework and individual written work will be marked regularly and all other work will be checked as part of the process. Exercise books will normally be seen by staff once each week.

HOW PARENTS CAN HELP
In addition to monitoring homeworks, parents can help their child by encouraging him/her to watch informative television programmes such as "Horizon", "Tomorrow¹s World" and "The Living World".

The reading of magazines, newspapers and science-based books, as well as visits to museums, can all provide added stimuli to promote and develop an enquiring mind.
