This course is studied by all pupils throughout Years 10 and 11. It takes the form of modular units which incorporate many elements that are considered by the school to be vital for adult life. They include careers advice, economic awareness, work experience, sex education, political education, study skills, global issues, environmental education and health education.
It is hoped that by the end of this two
year course students will feel able to deal with many of the issues
that face them as adults. To this end many of the units have practical
elements built into them in order to ensure that they are relevant
to the needs of the students.
ABOUT THE GCSE COURSE
Can you think clearly and express yourself coherently? Do you enjoy
investigating the past? Are you able to use different methods of
enquiry? Do you enjoy discussion and are able to appreciate someone
else's viewpoint. Do you enjoy looking at controversial issues?
Are you interested in other people's beliefs and attitudes?
If the answers to these questions are 'YES' have you considered
Religious Studies?
Religious Studies is a well established course with excellent examination
results at GCSE.
It is separated into two sections:
"The
Christian Life and the Gospel"
"The
effect of Christianity on Behaviour, Attitude and Lifestyle".
In the first part of the course students will be looking at the
authority of Mark's Gospel and its implications for Christians today
with special reference to the Person of Jesus, his suffering, death
and resurrection. In the second part of the syllabus students will
be looking at decisions of life and living, resolving conflicts
and equal opportunities. This will include such issues as marriage,
divorce, remarriage in church, abortion, euthanasia, environmental
responsibility, prejudice, poverty, aid to third world countries,
crime and punishment, the death sentence and equality.
All candidates will be required to complete two assignments during
the course, as well as an examination in both sections.
Religious Studies links well with other GCSEs and provides candidates
with a good grounding for future careers. It will enable them to
use skills learnt within the subject either in future employment
or as a bridge to numerous 'A' level and GNVQ courses. Religious
Studies tends to open more career doors than it closes. Career opportunities
include journalism, social work, librarianship, the caring professions,
police force, armed services, radio and television, teaching and
of course, the ministry - to name but a few.
NON-EXAM RELIGIOUS STUDIES
All students in years 10 and 11 receive a single period of R.E.
per week. This builds upon the foundation laid in years 7 - 9 and
covers issues such as the existence of God, the environment and
religious experience.
