March 2010
Staff and pupils enjoyed sunny weather for a tree-planting day at BRGS.
The students planting the trees were doing the work for the volunteering section of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. They had spent previous weeks preparing the site by removing unwanted ash trees and building a hedge of cut branches to keep out sheep while the new trees get established.

The trees were provided through a scheme called Tree Appeal and were paid for by the Bolton based Premex Group. Some more trees were provided by the Woodland Trust. Mr. Archer, said “Removing some of the ash trees has opened up the area to let in more light. We have planted a mixture of native trees including crab apple, cherry, dogwood, hazel and blackthorn. As they grow they should bring more colour and variety to our woodland garden. We are very grateful for the donation of these trees by Premex.”

While the trees were being planted another team of volunteers was hard at work on the other side of the school preparing ground for a small wildflower meadow at the top of Mount Avenue

Community Pride Finalists
The Environment Group at BRGS were nominated by a local Councillor for the Young Volunteer Award in Rossendale Council’s Community Pride Awards.

This follows the work done in Trickett’s Memorial Ground, maintaining the planter in the centre of Waterfoot, tidying the path between Mount Avenue and Booth Road, and working with community groups including Waterfoot Forward, Close to the Hedge in Bacup and Civic Pride in Rawtenstall.

Emilia Hartwell and Libby Ainsworth represented the Group at the award ceremony in Whitworth Civic Hall. They were presented with a framed certificate and vouchers for Ski Rossendale to share with other volunteers.

October 2009
Regular visits to Trickett’s Memorial Ground in Waterfoot in the autumn have been used to clear rubbish and brambles. Pupils have also worked with the community group Civic Pride in Rawtenstall.
Pupils doing the Duke of Edinburgh Award have been working to tidy and plant the rough verges by the path from Mount Avenue to Booth Road. Next summer we hope to create a wildflower area.
Over the winter we are continuing to work on Sunday mornings on new paths and steps in the school’s woodland garden and we have started to thin out the ash trees, ready to plant a variety of trees and shrubs in early spring.
Work has also continued on the school's vegetable plot.
July 2009
During enrichment week at the end of the summer term a great team of sixth formers worked on improvements to the paths and steps in the woodland garden and put new summer plants in the planter in the centre of Waterfoot. The new plants were funded by a grant from Rossendale Council and supplied by Close to the Hedge in Bacup.
