Your
Future in Maths and Computing
In January we hosted a ‘Your
Future in Maths and computing’ event in collaboration
with Manchester Metropolitan University for 40 Year
11
students who are hoping to continue into 6th form
to study Maths or computing. Students were involved
in computer programming, workshops about Mobile computing,
fun with mathematics and other specialist talks from
MMU lecturers. We hope to extend this link by attending
MMU next year with Y9 girls as part of the drive
to promote computing for girls. |

Primary
Schools Maths Challenge
Fourteen teams took part
in the 10th annual BRGS Primary Maths Challenge organised
by Susan Kennedy,
maths teacher and Head of Year 7.
The theme this
year was “A Journey into Space” and
pupils attempted ten challenges and puzzles relating
to the planets. As always, there were plenty of practical
activities culminating with a mathematical building
project to construct a rocket. The pupils, without
realising it, were working at a high mathematical
level and solving complex puzzles.
The standard was
extremely high, with only three points separating
the top four teams and the ultimate winner was Crawshawbooth
Primary School. |
Additional
Mathematics
Twenty five Year
11 students spent an unusual weekend sleeping in
school and then studying maths
during the day. The students had been studying a
new course called Additional Mathematics which
offers university entrance points and provides candidates
with an introduction to the maths studied at AS and
A level.
Explaining the unusual weekend Paul Reeves, Head
of Mathematics, said: “Our pupils have stayed
behind school for an hour each week to study for
this qualification. It should take about 60 hours
to teach, yet we’ve crammed it into 27 – the
pupils have worked
exceptionally hard. We wanted to review what we’d
taught as well as having some
fun.”

Year
8 Anglesey Residential
Twelve BRGS teachers heaved a collective
sigh of relief as they were rescued from a sinking
dinghy
in the Menai Straits. However, the rescue
wasn’t made by the Coastguard but by 120 Year
8 pupils who had paddled out on twelve self made
rafts!
The rescue was the culmination of a series
of problem solving activities the pupils completed
as part of
a three-day maths based residential on the island
of Anglesey...
