Sixth Form

Enrichment

In addition to A level courses, the Sixth Form also offers a number of enrichment opportunities.

Sixth Form students experience a broad programme of enrichment to help get the most out of the Sixth Form experience and help prepare for life beyond Sixth Form. The programme has been created to enable students to pursue skills and activities that are of interest to them and will develop the skills they need to be successful in their chosen next steps.

The main focus of the enrichment programme takes place in Year 12. Students in Year 13 are invited to attend all activities, such as talks from visiting speakers, subject to their availability. Enrichment over Year 12 will consist of the following:

Term 1 – Career Pathways
Students choose 2 of the following enrichment programmes to help them to prepare for their chosen next steps and learn more about areas of interest to them:

  • Arts and Creativity
  • Medicine, dentistry and veterinary science
  • Law, ethics and debate
  • Sport and fitness
  • STEM (engineering focus)
  • Oxbridge preparation programme

Term 2 – Life Skills
Students choose 2 of the following options to provide important and interesting skills for life:

  • Extended Project Qualification (see more below)
  • First Aid training
  • Driving theory test preparation
  • Law mock trials
  • SOS cook
  • Sign language
  • Volunteering
  • Charity fundraising
  • Get moving!

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a standalone qualification which enables a student to study a topic of their choice in depth. The EPQ is entirely coursework based and involves no written examination. As an AS Level qualification, the EPQ carries UCAS points.

Term 3 – Employability Skills and UCAS

Enrichment sessions for all students will focus on preparing them for their work experience placement at the end of Year 12. There will also be a range of university talks in this term.
Universities and employers increasingly require interpersonal skills and other qualities in addition to strong academic qualifications. This programme is designed to provide student with valuable opportunities to develop as a well-rounded young person.

In addition to our Year 12 enrichment programme, we also have a range of trips and visits and guest speakers both within subject areas and for the whole Sixth Form. Students who wish to apply for Oxbridge places will have the opportunity to visit Oxford and/or Cambridge and will also benefit from extensive support with the application and interview process, including mock interviews. Those who wish to go on to study medicine will also receive tailored support, including help with preparation for UCAT/BMAT assessments. In addition, we offer students contact with employers, such as the accountancy firm Mazars, to help with apprenticeship applications and development of employability skills. All students have the opportunity to take the Extended Project Qualification alongside their A Levels. This qualification allows for the development of skills coveted by employers and universities, such as research skills, time management and communication skills.

The development of leadership skills is important to us and all students in the Sixth Form are able to apply to be prefects supporting students in lower school. Many students also run clubs for those in the main school and get involved in cross-school extracurricular activities, such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Each year we hold elections for our Head Students who help to organise events, such as mixers for our new Year 12 students and charity fundraising activities.
