University you are at, why you chose this university,
and give one interesting fact about your university:
Manchester, was originally at UMIST but it merged last year. I chose it as it's in a fab city and did a great version of the course I'm doing.
Best things about your university city: Worst things about your university city:
There's at least 2 student nights every night of the week and the buses run 24/7. A little close to home and a very hard course.
Social scene/nightlife in your
university city?:
Popular activities at your university/ in your university city?:
The social life is fantastic. There are many areas and types of nights from goth, to pop to hip hop and house. Everything is open every night, from grundgy stickies type places to Deansgate for upmarket nights out. Football, obviously being so close to Manchester United and Manchester Ciity. Martial arts, swimming and hockey seem to feature a lot. But there's most sports in the world ever available.
How much on average per week do a) Halls of Residence, b) Renting a house,
cost in your university town/city?
What is the accommodation like in your university town/city?
Halls cost from £2/3000 for a student year. works out at between £40-60 a week. Houses cost anywhere from £45 and can pay anywhere up to £75 for a really nice flat! Accomodation varies. The halls aren't bad and there's some really nice flats and houses that are affordable. There are also some nasty dives. Always view first, all first years are guarenteed halls.
How much on average do you spend on food shopping per week?
£ 25, there's two of us so we share all shopping. Works out at £25 a week each.
What is the course you are studying? - Was it your original choice when applying for university? How many years
does your course last?
Management. Yes it was my original course. 3
What you enjoy most about your course/ what impresses you about it?: What you enjoy least about your course, and what could be improved :
All modules are optional after the first year. The seminar teaching is poor in some modules.
How do you rate the teaching standards on your course, and do
your tutors/lecturers/the university give you the right support for your studies?:
The teaching standards vary between modules as does the quality of personal tutor. I don't know mine at all!
What A Level Grades/UCAS points did you have to achieve to be accepted onto your course? Why did you choose the particular course you are studying?
ABB I wanted a course that would put me in good stead for a career in business.
Best thing about being at university: Worst thing about being at university:
Definately the friends I've met and the social life. Being permanently broke.
What do you plan to do after you graduate? If you were to recommend going to university, what would you say?
Get a graduate training position. I hope!! DO IT!! Not just for the education, to leave home, be your own person, meet amazing new friends and to experience independence with only half the responsibility.
Do you get homesick? If so, how do you deal with it?
I got stupidly homesick in the first week at uni. I had a boyfriend who went to Leeds and I missed him so much that I went to see him in the first weekend and didn't want to come back. I phoned my dad who came to get me. He gave me 3 choices, stay, move home and commute or quit uni and get a job. He said I had to stay for 1 week while I decided. When he came to get me 1 week later I felt a complete idiot as i was having a fantastic time by then.
Do you think you made the right choice? Or looking back, would you have gone to a different university/started a different course?
Looking back I would probably do at least a different course, but I love living in manchester and my friends, and can't say I actually regret anything
What have you achieved whilst being at university?
I can sky dive, I've travelled a lot, learnt a bit and become a more independent person.

UPDATE: September 2007

Louise is now enjoying a job in marketing, and is employed by Graduate Prospects,
based in Manchester.
