University you are at, why you chose this university,
and give one interesting fact about your university:
Newcastle w'hat like man!
why? hmmmmm, well its one of the best for dentistry (but then all dental schools are good). But the people are great here, its a right friendly northern place pet. Also, its a lot drier than Lancashire. It's only a small city (compared with Manchester, Leeds etc.) but it has all the city life and the countryside is really easy to get to. But i guess i was kinda called here.
Interesting fact: 100,000 bottles of Newcastle brown ale is sold in china every year!
Best things about your university city: Worst things about your university city:
The people. All my friends and the locals are top. All very warm and friendly. Plus the city is vibrant and alive with energy. There is loads to do, for night clubs and comedy clubs to culture at the Sage. There's the countryside and the seaside (at Tymouth or Whitley Bay) plus loads more.
Hmmmm. I suppose townies (if its politically correct to call youngsters that, but then all cities and towns have this problem). The worst thing is if its windy, its WINDY (especially if, like me, you are mad and cycle everywhere!)

Social scene/nightlife in your
university city?:

Popular activities at your university/ in your university city?:
Top. I don't go out much cos I'm old and dull, but when I did, there are loads of clubs. Some aren't that great such as the Boat but most are cool. Plus there are countless bars (of which I have visited many) if you just want to chill and chat. The union is large and ok, but I'm not really into going out anymore so I guess I'm a little out of touch with you young people. (Crikey i feel old!)
Lots of people cycle everywhere because Newcastle is pretty flat. Also, ultimate frisbee is big here. The uni gym has everything you could want, plus there are a few other gyms around (including a David Lloyd). Personally though I play badminton and there are plenty of courts (in Eldon Square shopping centre of all places)
How much on average per week do a) Halls of Residence, b) Renting a house,
cost in your university town/city?
What is the accommodation like in your university town/city?
Errrr, I guess between £40-55 for average student housing, you can find more expensive areas but that's a rough guess.
Loads of student houses and the halls of residence aren't bad (they aren't amazing but no student residence is!) Housing is spread over the whole city but there are lots of student areas.
How much on average do you spend on food shopping per week?
Personally about £80ish per month so about £20 per week but it's down to where you go and what you eat.
What is the course you are studying? - Was it your original choice when applying for university?
Dentistry on both accounts.
How many years does your course last?
5 years - I'm in my 5th year now.
What you enjoy most about your course/ what impresses you about it?:

I get to scare people! Most people are anxious about dental work (and honestly I can't blame them) but the most enjoyable thing is when you have a patient in pain, who is scared, and you get to remove the pain and they leave happy and say "that was much better than i expected."
What impresses me about dentistry, well I always wanted to do it (if you haven't guess already, I'm pretty sad, but honest).

What you enjoy least about your course, and what could be improved :
Hmmm, when patients don't turn up. Plus the NHS itself is annoying, like if you don't have the equipment and if lecturers don't turn up.
How do you rate the teaching standards on your course, and do
your tutors/lecturers/the university give you the right support for your studies?:
Very good, excellent on clinics. Ok to good for lectures - you can ask all the clinicans questions, they are usually happy to help.
What A Level Grades/UCAS points did you have to achieve to be accepted onto your course? Why did you choose the particular course you are studying?
A in a science (bio, phys, chem or math) and two Bs (one of the grades must be in chemistry) . I've always wanted to do dentistry, so I guess I was called into it.
Best thing about being at university: Worst thing about being at university:
Friends, my church, my course, independance. 5 years is a long time and your friends get degrees and leave whilst you are at uni, that's the only bad thing.
What do you plan to do after you graduate?
Be a dentist (not very suprising) but I'm not sure where yet, either Newcastle or York
If you were to recommend going to university, what would you say?
Pick a course you will enjoy, something you have an interest in. Also, uni is a great experience, meeting loads of new people. It's an eye opener to the world.
Do you get homesick? If so, how do you deal with it?
Not really, you miss your friends from home but you make new friends and you get to go home every couple of months anyhow.
Do you think you made the right choice? Or looking back, would you have gone to a different university/started a different course?
Yes I do.
What have you achieved whilst being at university?
Hopefully to become a dentist. Lots of personal things but definitely I now see the world differently.
Any other comments about your university experience:
University rocks!
UPDATE: September 2007
After graduating in 2007, Noel is now a fully qualified dentist and is situated at a dental practice in Nelson, Lancashire.
