University you are at, why you chose this university,
and give one interesting fact about your university:
Leeds University. I chose Leeds because it had the perfect course for me and I felt it was far enough away from home for me to be independent but also close enough if I wanted to come home quickly!
Interesting fact: In 1996, Artist, Damian Hirst presented an entire tv documentary about The Worsley Building at Leeds University and how fantastic it is! I hasten to add this was very much an opinion in the minority of the students.
Best things about your university city: Worst things about your university city:
The nightlife, the close proximity to the city centre, the vast choice of accommodation and the student union which offers shops, bars, clubs and a huge array of societies. The bus services are expensive and very much run as and when they feel like it.

Social scene/nightlife in your
university city?:

Popular activities at your university/ in your university city?:
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! Whatever your music tastes are you will find somewhere to enjoy it! There are great student nights every night of week (including weekends) but also classy cocktail bars and both famous and infamous clubs. The union provides a great live music venue which played host to the likes of Fatboy Slim, Maroon 5, The Kooks and Lostprophets while I was there. Also the home of the famous 'The Who, Live at Leeds' album of 1970s. There are sports clubs for every possible sport you could imagine and also for all abilities. I was particularly involved in ls:tv, the univeristy television station which has been voted best student broadcaster for 2 out of the last 3 years at the national student tv awards. We also have a great newspaper and radio station, performance societies, literally if you can think of it, it more than likely it exists. And if it doesn't you can set it up!
How much on average per week do a) Halls of Residence, b) Renting a house,
cost in your university town/city?
What is the accommodation like in your university town/city?
Halls cost approx. £70 per week self catering but you didn't have to move out in the holidays and you don't have to pay for the summer months.
House sharing with 5 other people was £52.50 per week.
My accommodation was basic but then I was paying a basic rate and it was more than adequete. In first year I shared a bathroom with one other girl but it was ensuite.
There is a great variety of prices so if you want to be in luxury accommodation you can be but you'll pay luxury prices but there is plenty of cheap accommodationboth near the city centre on campus and about 4 miles out of town in the countryside.
How much on average do you spend on food shopping per week?
About £20-25 in Morrisons which was within walking distance of my house. Although in my 3rd year I was very grateful to ASDA for introducing online shopping!
What is the course you are studying? - Was it your original choice when applying for university?
I studied Broadcasting which is billed as 'a course for future producers & directors of television'.
It was absolutely my first choice of course. If I hadn't have got on this course I was seriously considering taking a gap year and reapplying.
How many years does your course last?
3 years.
What you enjoy most about your course/ what impresses you about it?:

I enjoyed the practical aspects of my course and being taught by people in the television industry who weren't afraid to tell it like it is!
Undoubtedly what impresses me about the course is that the last 3 months consists of a work experience placement in the tv industry which you interview for in a professional environment.

What you enjoy least about your course, and what could be improved :
Some of the academic tasks we were asked to were incredibly useful, some were clearly there to keep those high up in the university happy and have not been remotely useful in the industry.
How do you rate the teaching standards on your course, and do
your tutors/lecturers/the university give you the right support for your studies?:
The teaching on my course was great. Because the lecturers were still/had recently worked in television they knew exactly what we needed to be successful.
What A Level Grades/UCAS points did you have to achieve to be accepted onto your course?
BBB.
Why did you choose the particular course you are studying?
I chose the course as I was very clear that I wanted to work in television and although doing a vocotional course might not be the right thing for everyone doing this course meant that I was in a position at the end of my degree of getting a job immediately which was a large factor in choosing the course.
Best thing about being at university: Worst thing about being at university:
The friends I made, getting involved in student tv and getting a job once I'd graduated. The initial loneliness of finding yourself in a new place not knowing anyone was a bit overwhelming but soon passed.
What do you plan to do after you graduate?
I'm working at the BBC as a production co-ordinator. I started a year ago as a runner on Blue Peter and worked my way up to production team assistant in CBBC and I've just been promoted to production co-ordinator and am returning to Blue Peter shortly.
If you were to recommend going to university, what would you say?
You will absolutely have the time of your life & you'll make the greatest friends of your life! I'd say its 60% about the course and 40% about learning about yourself without the apron strings of your parents.
Do you get homesick? If so, how do you deal with it?
I did in the first semester as I was missing friends from home who I was still in a great deal of contact with. I was very close to leaving after Christmas of the first year but my parents convinced me to go back and that was such a turning point. I joined ls:tv, made an effort to meet people on my course and their friends and never really looked back after that.
Do you think you made the right choice? Or looking back, would you have gone to a different university/started a different course?
I 100% made the right choice I can't imagine having spent my university days anywhere but Leeds and if I'd quite happily move back there to settle down.
What have you achieved whilst being at university?
I grew up hugely and learnt a lot about other people and myself. I got a good degree and a job which I enjoy.
Any other comments about your university experience:
I loved it - if you're seriously interested in a career in television do broadcasting at Leeds and join ls:tv. It will put you in the best position possible to work in tv and you will have an amazing 3 years!
