| University
you are at, why you chose this university,
and give one interesting fact about your
university: |
| University
of Leeds. Large university with
a diverse mix of people, good
nightlife and not too far
from home. |
| Best
things about your university city: |
| Nightlife,
shopping. |
| Worst
things about your university city: |
| Cold and rainy mostly! |
Social
scene/nightlife in your university city?:
|
| Good, lots
of nightclubs, student bars and
now a new music venue means bigger
bands are playing in Leeds. |
| Popular
activities at your university/ in your university
city?: |
| Wide
range of sports clubs and special interest
societies e.g. wine tasting, photography, sky-diving.
Also a good volunteer society which takes local
kids on trips out and holidays. |
| Favourite
places to shop |
| Victorian
quarter |
| How
much on average per week do a) Halls of Residence,
b) Renting a house, cost in your university
town/city? |
| Halls-
shared room cost £45/week. Renting a
room in a shared house around £60-70/week in Headingley area. |
| What
is the accommodation like in your university
town/city? |
| My
halls were on campus and a bit shabby (!) but
there are newer blocks which are much
nicer,
but more expensive. |
| How
much on average do you spend on food shopping
per week? |
| £20-30 |
| What
is the course you are studying? - Was
it your original choice when applying for
university? |
|
Medicine |
| How
many years does your course last? |
| 6
years (inc. intercalated BSc) |
| What
you enjoy most about your course/ what impresses
you about it?: |
| Medicine
at Leeds mixes early patient contact with
lectures and small group work.
The elective in the 4th year is great as
you get to work abroad for 3 months.
You can also get a BSc degree alongside
the medical one for only 1 extra year
of study. |
| What
you enjoy least about your course, and what
could be improved : |
| The early
years can be dull as there is a lot
of science to learn and not
that much patient contact to remind
you why you're studying it all. |
How
do you rate the teaching standards on your
course, and do
your tutors/lecturers/the university give you the right support for your
studies?: |
| Generally good. We were taught by a mixture of doctors
and scientists. |
| What
A Level Grades/UCAS points did you have to
achieve to be accepted onto your course? |
| 3 A-levels at AAB |
| Why
did you choose the particular course you
are studying? |
| I
enjoyed biology at school but wanted a job
that involved working with people.
Medicine offered me a way to combine these. |
| Best
thing about being at university: |
| Work
hard and play hard |
| Worst thing about being at university: |
| Early morning
lectures; exams |
| What
do you plan to do after you graduate? |
| Working
as a doctor in Leeds, training to specialise
in Child Psychiatry |
| If
you were to recommend going to university,
what would you say? |
| Try
to organise your finances as
it's easy to blow your loan at the start of
term and be left struggling at the
end. |
| Do
you get homesick? If so, how do you deal
with it? |
| Leeds isn't
too far from Rossendale and easy
to reach on the train. I kept in contact
regularly by phone, and my parents
visited a couple of times each term to feed me! |
| Do
you think you made the right choice? Or looking
back, would you have gone to a different
university/started a different course? |
| Yes,
I'm pleased i chose Leeds and
i enjoyed my medical degree which has enabled
me to get the job i wanted |
| What
have you achieved whilst being at university? |
I
volunteered to take local children
on trips and holidays, and liased
with social services to
identify those most in need. Surviving
6 years of study was also a big achievment!
