University you are at, why you chose this university,
and give one interesting fact about your university:
Manchester Uni, I chose this uni as it's only one of a few that does my course.
Interesting fact: the road outside my uni has the most buses in the whole of Europe! Therefore i'm never stranded when its raining!
Best things about your university city: Worst things about your university city:
The fun people, lots of lovely shops and fun places to go at night. It always rains and exams aren't so good.
Social scene/nightlife in your
university city?:
Popular activities at your university/ in your university city?:
So much variety, simply a lot to do for everyone. However, its very lively and quite quickly paced so if you're a quiet type, it's maybe not for you. There are great places to watch live music, the Manchester academy, the Apollo and lots of theatres if you fancy a bit of culture! Theres two big sports centres by the university and a huge swimming pool. Also theres the Printworks, numerous clubs and bars around the city centre but also more of the same in student areas such as Fallowfield.
How much on average per week do a) Halls of Residence, b) Renting a house,
cost in your university town/city?
What is the accommodation like in your university town/city?
Renting a house for me is £60 a week but I know lots of people who pay lots less. Pretty basic but it's not where you live but more who you live with.
How much on average do you spend on food shopping per week?
About £35 a week because I buy a lot of chocolate!
What is the course you are studying? - Was it your original choice when applying for university? How many years
does your course last?
Optometry, I first started doing History but wasn't too keen on all the reading. 3 years.
What you enjoy most about your course/ what impresses you about it?: What you enjoy least about your course, and what could be improved :
It's challenging! It's rather a lot of work and it's only a small course so I miss the variety of people other people get on different courses.
How do you rate the teaching standards on your course, and do
your tutors/lecturers/the university give you the right support for your studies?:
Yes. Everyone is very helpful if you get stuck and although your kind of left to fend for yourself, you soon find a way of working which suits you. Also friends on your course are really useful to help you sort out any academic problems.
What A Level Grades/UCAS points did you have to achieve to be accepted onto your course? Why did you choose the particular course you are studying?
A, A, B I just really would like to work with people and so I thought this was something different that helped me pursue that.
Best thing about being at university: Worst thing about being at university:
Meeting people from all around the country and discovering there's so many fun things to do in a big city. Usual work deadlines!
What do you plan to do after you graduate? If you were to recommend going to university, what would you say?
Hopefully go travelling and get a job so I can go to Topshop all the time! I'd say that as well as being a good academic step it's a real character building experience. You are met with all kinds of situations that make you much more confident, independant and happier
Do you get homesick? If so, how do you deal with it?
I did at first, I usually eat chocolate if I'm sad but it's easy to call or email home and lots of courses have reading week so lots of people go home then.
Do you think you made the right choice? Or looking back, would you have gone to a different university/started a different course?
I think I've made the right decision!

UPDATE: September 2007
After graduating with a 2:1 in 2006, Kate successfully completed her pre-registration year and is now a fully qualified Optometrist, employed by Boots Opticians.
