University
you are at, why you chose this university,
and give one interesting fact about your
university: |
Bretton
Hall, University of Leeds, which
I chose because it was the only course
of its kind in the country.
Interesting fact – the Chuckle
Brothers trained at Bretton. |
| Best
things about your university city: |
Worst
things about your university city: |
Bretton
is in the middle of the Yorkshire
Sculpture Park and surrounded by
300 acres of beautiful parkland – it’s
an amazing place to live!
|
You
can feel pretty isolated from the
traditional “student experience”. |
Social
scene/nightlife in your
university city?:
|
Popular
activities at
your university/ in your university city?: |
| Wakefield is
awesome on a Monday night, everything is catered
to students and is very cheap and pretty varied. Leeds is
also close at hand if you want something bigger. |
At
Bretton it’s mainly performance courses
so all the drama societies and musical
societies tend to do the best! |
How
much on average per week do a) Halls of Residence,
b) Renting a house,
cost in your university town/city? |
What
is the accommodation like in your university
town/city? |
The
rent on my house is £54 per week – there
are 3 of us sharing a 4 bed house in the centre
of Wakefield. It’s pretty huge.
My halls used to cost me £2695 per year, but they were
catered and on campus. |
Pretty
good – most local landlords work
under Unipol who safeguards the standards of
housing. There are a lot of big Victorian
terraced houses. |
| How
much on average do you spend on food shopping
per week? |
| I
lived in catered halls so I had an allowance
of £900 for a year to use in the refectory. Outside
of that I probably spent less than £5
per week. |
| What
is the course you are studying? - Was
it your original choice when applying for
university? |
| Arts
Education, specialising in Drama & Performance
BA. It was my first choice. |
| How
many years does your course last? |
| 3
years. |
| What
you enjoy most about your course/ what
impresses you about it?: |
| My
course was the study of performance
and drama as more than just entertainment.
The course included a lot of practical
work-based learning which has meant
that now I have graduated I have worked
with children of varying ages, the elderly,
adults and children with learning difficulties,
in hospitals, hospices, schools, museums and
corporations. It has given me a lot
of scope for my future career. |
| What
you enjoy least about your course, and what
could be improved : |
| It
required a lot of self-discipline especially
on work-based projects. When there is no teacher
to tell you off for not putting the effort
in - you have to really love what you’re
doing. |
How
do you rate the teaching standards on your
course, and do
your tutors/lecturers/the university give you the right support for your
studies?: |
| Amazing.
Bretton is a small place, my class was small
and my tutors were all extremely qualified
and experienced. We were all supported
in everything we did. |
| What
A Level Grades/UCAS points did you have
to achieve to be accepted onto your course? |
Why
did you choose the particular course you
are studying? |
| B,B,C |
I
wanted to use my passion for stage
performance to benefit others. The
course was very specifically NOT a
performance course. The course promised
to increase my skills within the realms of
performance as a tool to work with
people, not to be an actress. |
| Best
thing about being at university: |
Worst
thing about being at university: |
| The
friends you make. |
The stigma
and expectation that you are a drunken idiot. |
| What
do you plan to do after you graduate? |
| I
am an elected Sabbatical Officer
on Leeds University Union; it’s
a 12 month position. |
| If
you were to recommend going to university,
what would you say? |
| Go.
Don’t go with an agenda. Make
friends with everyone you meet and don’t
worry if people don’t like you. Take
every opportunity you are given especially
to try something new. Don’t worry about
money. |
| Do
you get homesick? If so, how do you deal
with it? |
| I
didn’t really. My parents always
made a massive effort to be a part of my life. |
| Do
you think you made the right choice? Or
looking back, would you have gone to a
different university/started a different
course? |
| I
made the right choice. Definitely. |
| What have you achieved whilst being
at university? |
| So
much. I got my degree for one, met loads of
amazing people, and was given the opportunity
to do some pretty scary things. I
got involved in student activism and politics which
led me to various conferences and demonstrations
around the UK, which led me to travel
to Israel and Palestine to explore
the many aspects of the conflict. My
uni life was amazing. |
