Lauren Mannion
Worked until New Year then
worked and lived in Dublin until summer.

" I think that applying to university in my gap year was SO much better than the first time around - I thought much more about what I really wanted to do, was less rushed and stressed about it, and most importantly, I already had my grades so all my offers were unconditional."

Why did you take a gap year? - was it planned?

My gap year was semi-planned - my first choice was Cambridge and I knew that I didn't want to go to my second choice uni, so I decided I would take a year off if I didn't get the results I needed for Cambridge.. And I didn't!

What did you do on your gap year, and why?
I worked in good old ASDA until the New Year to save some money, then moved to Dublin with my best friend and worked there until the summer.
What were the advantages of taking a gap year? What did you achieve?
Erm... not sure I achieved anything, but I had a great time! I suppose I did learn to be independent by living away from home for the first time and working full-time.

I also think that applying to university in my gap year was SO much better than the first time around - I thought much more about what I really wanted to do, was less rushed and stressed about it, and most importantly, I already had my grades so all my offers were unconditional.
Were there any disadvantages to taking a gap year?
None that I can think of, apart from the sheer panic at the beginning if you have nothing planned and feel like you maybe never will!
Would you recommend what you did on your gap year to others?
Yeah, it was a good laugh! I know it wasn't that exciting or exotic compared to people who go backpacking around the world or doing voluntary work in Peru, but without planning ahead and saving for months, those weren't options for me unfortunately! Anyway, I went to uni a year older and wiser, happy with the uni I'd chosen and already used to living away from home - and I also had money that I'd saved up over the year, which helped a lot.
