Biology

The Biology AS syllabus is divided into three units:
» Core Principles
» Genes and Genetic Engineering
» Physiology and Transport
plus Coursework.

The AS has been designed to improve progression from GCSE to advanced level. Specification B begins with core principles, mostly physiology and Biochemistry.
Three teachers will deliver this curriculum until the end of November, after which time the Genes and Genetic Engineering unit will start with one Biologist, while the other two complete Unit 1 in readiness for the January module examination in this topic. In the Spring term, the remaining unit will be delivered alongside coursework which is mostly in-house and practically based.

The A2 syllabus consists of:
» Energy, Control and Continuity
» Environment
» Applying Biological Principles
» Applied Ecology
plus Coursework.
» Microbes and Disease

A2 follows the same trend as AS with the Energy, Control and Continuity Module examined in January, while the Environment Module and Microbes & Disease are examined in June.

The second piece of coursework, carried out in the Winter Term, forms a significant proportion of the mark for the Environment Module.

Results emerging from modular examinations have been well in excess of national averages; a trend which we expect to continue.

We recommend that students should enter this A' level science with a minimum of BB in Dual Award. We aim to develop your understanding of biological facts and principles and to help you to fulfil your academic potential and achieve the grades required to progress to the next stage of your chosen career. We offer you constructive feedback about your progress via topic tests and monitoring and a promise to set and mark work. There are about 100 students on our A' level course and we anticipate further growth in numbers.

We expect you to have a positive attitude, a willingness to develop self-study habits to consolidate work done in class and the motivation to succeed. We expect prompt attendance at all lessons, with the appropriate files and books and that work is handed in on time.
