Chemistry
There are three units to be examined in A level
Chemistry in each of the sixth form years: two
written examinations and a written EMPA
(practical) similar to GCSE ISA (including the
teacher assessment of practical skills.

During the course we aim to develop your
knowledge and understanding of Chemistry
to provide a pathway to further study whilst
ensuring that your learning is enjoyable, and
enhances your enthusiasm for Chemistry.

Throughout the course we will ensure
relevance to contemporary issues by building
on the concepts of How Science Works that
were introduced at GCSE. You will be
encouraged to gain hands-on practical skills
and data analysis skills throughout the course
and ultimately you will demonstrate a synoptic
understanding of the course material.

AS COURSE (Year 12)
At AS level you will be given a solid grounding
in foundation Chemistry. The specification
introduces the chemical reactivity of atoms
and molecules and provides an
understanding of their structures.
The development and use of the periodic table is
further explained. Calculations are a major
part of A level Chemistry and the application
of calculations to practical work is crucial.
You will also study organic chemistry, collision
theory, redox and the extraction of metals.
The introduction of Practical Skills
Assignments (PSA) into the specification
allows teachers to credit students for work
done in routine class practicals.
A2 COURSE (Year 13)
At A2 level the specification develops the
concepts of physical chemistry introduced at
AS. Students will study kinetics, equilibria,
organic chemistry (including polymers) and
spectroscopic techniques to determine the
molecular formulae and structures of organic
compounds. A study of acids and bases is also
made.

Students will continue to be assessed
through PSA, gaining credit for work done in
routine class practical.
