AS Course (Year
12)
UNIT 1: Understanding Dance (40%)
Split into 2 sections:
A—Structured Questions (20 marks)
These questions require a knowledge of
anatomy (bones and muscles), health and
safety, first aid, diet etc
B—Essay Questions (40 marks)
For this section you will be required to study
five professional dance works in detail. You
will be asked generic questions, and will be
required to bring information together from
all the different works.
UNIT 2: Choreography
and Performance
(60%) Split into 2 sections:
A—Solo Choreography and Performance
(60 marks) You are marked on both your choreography and the way you perform it.
You will be provided with a series of questions,
and you will choose one of those to base your dance upon. You will be in charge
of creating
and performing it alone. You will produce a programme note for this dance to
describe the meaning and purpose.
B—Performance in Duo/Trio (30 marks)
For this section you are not marked on the choreography, simply the way you perform
it.
The dance is themed, and you will be responsible for researching and contributing
to choreography.

A2 Course
(Year 13)
UNIT 3- Dance Appreciation: Content & Context (25%)
Split into 2 sections:
A – One question on a chosen area of study (40 marks)
Candidates develop knowledge and understanding of a specific area of study related
to the development of one of the following: modern dance, ballet, jazz dance.
B - One question on set work studied (40 marks)
For this section you will be required to study one professional dance work in
detail. You will be asked questions that require critical analysis and appreciation
of that set work.
UNIT 4—Group Choreography and Solo Performance (25%) Split
into 2 sections:
A - Group Choreography (45 marks)
This section requires the candidate to create imaginative dances for others,
with an understanding of current practice, whilst drawing on the conventions
and traditions of the past.
B - Solo Performance (30 marks)
For this section, candidates are required to apply performance skills to a specific
practitioner within an area of study, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding
of safe practice and the appropriate technical and expressive skills needed in
solo presentation.
