English Literature

The English Department is a large, friendly and highly successful one, dedicated to offering you interesting, stimulating and relevant courses which lead to academic success.

The Department offers four subjects at AS/A2 level - English Language, English Literature, English Language and Literature (combined) and Drama and Theatre Studies. We know how important it is to choose your courses wisely so please ask - we are here to help!

If you are an avid reader and have enjoyed studying, discussing and writing about the texts you have read for GCSE, then English Literature is the course for you!

The course aims to develop critical judgement and a confident personal response to all forms of poetry, prose and drama. Naturally, a good deal of reading is involved; personal input, enthusiasm and self-motivation are, therefore, essential.

To support your efforts, there are videos, audiotapes, library reference books, theatre visits and, of course, an experienced team of well qualified teachers. Visits are arranged to lectures on set texts and students are kept up to date with relevant university courses of interest.

Higher Education and Career opportunities:
It has long been recognised that the study of English Literature is of great value in areas as diverse as Law, Journalism, Media and Management. We hope that, ultimately, our students leave BRGS with a lifelong love of literature, as well as an excellent and highly valued qualification for their future careers.
