Geography

The subject is taught by a team of teachers, each of whom is a graduate in Geography with many years of teaching experience in a variety of institutions.

Throughout the course the emphasis is on stimulating student interest whilst also aiming for high academic standards. By studying A level Geography, candidates develop their analytical skills and also learn how to express themselves clearly and concisely. These attributes are valuable both for those students intending to proceed to higher education and for those seeking employment at 18.
Students studying 'A level Geography should be prepared to work hard but in return, at the end of the two years, they should have a far greater understanding of the world in which we live and a sound academic qualification commensurate with their abilities.

The AQA syllabus covers 3 main areas:
(i) Change in the physical environment covering rivers, glaciation, weather, climate, soils and vegetation.
(ii) Change in the human environment covering employment, social change, urban areas, transnatural companies, migration, separatism and the European Union.
(iii) People and the Environment including population and resources, energy and hazards.

AS Course (Year 12)
In Year 12 one paper is taken in January and two in June to constitute the AS.

There are three units in the AS course:
» Unit 1 Changes in the Physical and Human Environments. (largely based in the UK)
» Unit 2 Glacial Environments
» Unit 3 Urban change in the UK.

A2 Course (Year 13)
In Year 13 a fieldwork study is submitted in January. In June there is also a core paper and the final component is the synoptic paper which is a decision making exercise based on material issued to the student four weeks in advance of the examination.

The A2 course consists of a further three units:
» Unit 4 Global Change
» Unit 5 A Decision Making Exercise
» Unit 6 The Practical Paper and for a few The Investigative Option.

Except for the Investigative Option assessment is by examination with the papers demonstrating a variety of approaches from essay writing, structured questions, data response material to decision-making based on information issued in advance.

The teaching approaches consist of formal lessons, group work, studies in the field and researching data.

There is a strong emphasis on fieldwork with day visits to North Wales, Blackburn and Salford in Year 12 and a day visit to the Trough of Bowland to collect data in Year 13. Students are offered also the opportunity of an optional trip to Iceland.
