German

Courses at AS and A2 level at BRGS at BRGS offer an excellent opportunity for students who have been successful in their GCSE studies to deepen and further their knowledge.

We aim to teach a modem and effective German for the modern world and examine themes and topics centred on the interests and concerns of the present generation. Students are encouraged to research contemporary topics through film, magazine articles and fiction. Their findings at A2 are presented in two pieces of coursework and not by a written examination at the end of the course. We feel that this allows students to perform at a more creative and higher level and to have more personal input in the course.

The school has been equipped with Internet facilities which allow access to areas of cultural and general interest. Studying a foreign language will help you
to develop many of the interpersonal skills required by employers today and it will help increase your choice of future career.

AS Course (Year 12)

Studying a foreign language as one of the AS
options allows a students to demonstrate to a university or employer a true breadth of
experience together with a wide range of the communication skills necessary in the modern
world.

AS German builds on skills successfully used by
the student at GCSE and the transition to AS is not expected to be daunting.

The three examination papers taken at the end of the lower sixth year are in a similar style to those met previously at GCSE: Listening and Reading Comprehension, brief written answers in German, an Oral Examination in three parts - prepared material, presentation and discussion, conversation.

The differences and challenges are that the topics studied are from a more adult world: "Young People today" and "People in Society". As in English GCSE a booklet will be provided by the Examination Board with a series of texts for study
(8 short, 2 long). These extracts are from
magazines and books.

A2 Course (Year 13)

The A2 course in German enables advanced and specialist linguists the opportunity to raise skills to university entrance level. It maintains and upholds the "gold standard" demands of the traditional A' level and more importance is attached to grammatical accuracy and written fluency. Candidates will write an in-depth essay on each of the two topics: a modern literary text and a social theme. In the German A2 course, these essays will be presented as coursework by April in Year 13. There will be two examination papers at the end of the Year 13:
» Listening, Reading
» Writing (2.25 hours) and Speaking (15 minutes).

Higher Education and Career opportunities:
German has re-emerged as a major European language alongside English and a working knowledge of German has important advantages for students keen to work in industry, commerce or the professions. It can be studied at University in its own right or in conjunction with another language or disciplines as varied as History, Business Studies and Law.
