Applied Health and Social Care

This course will be of interest to those students who are looking to work in the fields of work broadly related to Health and Social Care such as:

» Social Work
» Occupational Therapy
» Child Care

Also, the course will be accepted by universities as an A Level subject for entry into courses such as Social Work and Psychology.

Students will develop an understanding of the nature of work in Health and Social Care through a variety of work-related contexts such as work experience, links with local employers, case studies and research.

There are 3 AS modules (Year 12):

» Effective Caring: students will be tested in an examination of one and a half hours on their ability to choose and justify appropriate sevices for clients and their ability to evaluate the appropriateness and the quality of treatments described.

» Effective Communication: students will choose a topic inb health and social care and gather information about the topic, design and produce a leaflet/poster, prepare and deliver a 10 minute talk to a small group and evaluate the materials and presentation.

» Health, Illness and Disease: students will produce a questionnaire on attitudes to and understanding of concepts of health and ill health, and two articles suitable for printing in a newspaper.







The A2 course also consists of 3 modules (Year 13):
» Working in Health and Social Care: students will write a report in which they decribe and evaluate job roles in health and social care. These could include the following: social worker, care assistant, GP, health visitor, radiotherapist, hospital nurse, etc.

» Understanding Human Behaviour: students will complete a two-hour examination on Factors affecting development (biological and socio-economic). Theories of Cognitive development (Piaget, Skinner and SLT) and Theories of Personality Development (Freud, Maslow and Bowlby).

» Research methods and Perspectives: students will design, implement and report a practical investigation such as investigating the effects of age on recall of everyday information.
