A Level Music Modules

AS one year course

Unit 1: Performing - Practical Examination (externally assessed)
A short solo recital
(5-8 mins, voice or main instrument, 60 marks) and
either: a second instrument recital
or: ensemble/duet performance
or: performance of own composition (40 marks)

Unit 2: Composing 1 (internally assessed, subject to external moderation)
Western Tonal Harmony:
short exercises in harmonising given melodies will develop your understanding (50 marks) and
either: a fully noted composition for between 4 and 10 instruments.
or: an arrangement of a lead sheet.
Score, commentary and recording must be submitted for both options.(50 marks)

Unit 3: Introduction to Historical Studies (timed examination)
2 hour written examination
linked to your work in composing and performing.
The Paper has three sections:
Aural extract (35 marks)
Set works (40 marks)
Choice of questions covering the background to the music studied
(25 marks)






A2 an additional year

Unit 4: Performing 1- practical examination (externally assessed)
Interpretation:
Solo Recital: 12-15 mins. (60 marks)
A written investigation of music listened to: that is related to the recital programme you perform (40 marks)
Both assessed by a visiting examiner.

Unit 5: Composing 2 (externally assessed)
A commissioned vocal composition
(50 marks)
A folio of exercises in stylistic techniques or
A further compositional assignment - perhaps using Technology - film story board (50 marks)
The folio is submitted for external assessment.

Unit 6: Historical and Analytical Studies (2.5 hour examination)
The paper has three sections:
A) 2 aural extracts - based on a wide range of early 20th century vocal writing (45 marks)
B) 1 question from a choice of 4, prescribed historical topics - (35 marks)
C) 1 question from a choice of 5 - which assesses the candidates' ability to understand the links between the different units of the course. (20 marks)

Chosen Topic: A choice from a range of topics, for example: Integration of music and drama (1955 - 2000)
This includes the opportunity to study the musical and music for films.
