Religious Studies

This course is open to any student who wishes to examine questions such as: Does God exist? Why does God allow suffering? What makes an action right or wrong? Can euthanasia be justified? and many others. Students do not need to be comitted to any particular religion or belief and students will be judged purely upon the argument presented, not their own personal beliefs.


This course combines well with many new subjects such as Psychology, Sociology, Business Studies and Media Studies as well as more traditional subject such as History and English.


AS Course (Year 12)

In the first year students will complete 3 units covering the philosophy of religion and ethics.

» Coursework: Medical Ethics
Students will study medical ethics and
environmental ethics from a variety of view points including non-religious theories. Nuclear War, Sexuality, Abortion, Euthanasia, Genetic
Engineering.
» Ethical Theory and practical issues How do
humans know right from wrong?
Are people free to choose?
» Philosophy of Religion Does God exist? Can his existence be proven? Is science in conflict with religion?

A2 Course (Year 13)
Students study a further 3 units which build on their knowledge from the first year.

» Religion and Ethics II. What is morality? Should
we use the death penalty?

» Philosophy of Religion. Proofs of God, Atheism, Life after death, use of language in religion.

» Philisophy and Ethics- Synoptic paper which covers aspects of all other units in relationship to Religious Experience.

Higher education and career opportunities:


An A' level in Religious Studies will be welcomed by all universities and employers. It is a useful qualification for careers such as social work, the media, law and teaching. Students will develop analytical and evaluation skills, debating techniques and consider issues from a variety of viewpoints.
