APRIL 2011
Under 16 Lancashire Schools Basketball Final
BRGS Vs Corpus Christi, Preston
A nail biter but it shouldn't have been.
We started off the better team finding it quite easy to score, too easy perhaps as we raced into a 16-6 lead. The first quarter was turning into a cruise, but some poor defending allowed Corpus Christi back into the game reducing our lead to a mere 5 points, 23-18 at the first break.

MARCH 2011
English Schools Basketball, Last 16
The under 16 basketball team hosted St Peter's, Belle Vue.
After a very slow start going 0-8 down, a time out was called, a flea in the ear was issued and the performance then came up to the standards expected and we drew level at 13-13.
However, St Peter's are a very good side and the game kept slipping away, 22-33 but we kept bringing it back, 42-45, only to see the deficit extend again, 50-62.
At the start of the final quarter we had, again, reduced the gap to trail by only 5 points, 64-69 but that was as close as we got and, realising that we weren't going to win, let the game slip away to lose 76-93.

St Peter's were a little more comfortable passing the ball and were a bit quicker at getting to loose balls but otherwise it was a very close and highly contested game. To be honest, the best team won.

Despite saying that, we had the two best players on court in Conor Porter who scored 42 points and Ben Chicken with 22 but the next best 5 or 6 players belonged to St Peter's.

Our next game is the Lancashire Final against Corpus Christi from Preston.

The team
Ben Geraghty
Sam Chicken
Ashley Greenwood
Conor Porter
Joe Donaldson
Ben Chicken
Fraser Phillips
Danny Mousley
David Burns
Adil Siddiki

Our England player, Mollie Campbell, is not eligible to play in English Schools games.

APRIL 2010
NW 6th Forms Div 2 Play Off Final Versus Preston College
A very close and exciting game between two evenly matched teams in which the lead changed hands 14 times. At the end of the first quarter Preston led 22-20.

At half time the score was 39-38in BRGS’s favour. Preston held a slender advantage at the end of the third quarter 61-59. Half way through the final period BRGS led 69-67, it could still go either way but 6 unanswered points in the next couple of minutes swung the game our way and we won the trophy 78-69.

This is the 5th time that BRGS has won this trophy, the previous 4 being in 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003.

The Players
An excellent team performance with everybody living up to their potential.

Jake Campbell was awarded the MVP-Most Valuable Player-for his overall contribution with excellent defence and rebounding. Jake was also the teams second highest scorer with 22 points.

Cameron Bradshaw performed his usual trick of getting himself fouled out but not before he’d scored 34 points making him the games top scorer.

Colm Kennedy and Tom Sipocz both performed superbly in their last game for the school, winning a trophy for the first time in 7 years of trying.

Jamie McMullen’s defensive rebounds and shot blocks were crucial in keeping Preston’s score down.

Josh Rhodes and David Adams worked tirelessly for the team.

Gaige Kinsella had the important job of keeping the bench warm.

MAY 2009
Brother and sister Jake & Mollie Campbell came close to claiming a double victory at national level.

There was glory for Jake, whose team took the gold medal while Mollie had to settle for bronze.

MAY 2006

Lancashire Schools Basketball Under 14 Girls Final Montgomery 39, Bacup 32
15th May 2006 at Darwen Vale High School

From looking at the results in the pool games and semi-finals Bacup appeared to be slight favourites for the final having had better results than Montgomery. Both teams started slowly but it was Montgomery that held the early advantage to lead 9-4 at the first break. The second quarter was tight but at the end of the half Montgomery had extended their lead from 5 to 7 points.

With two so well matched teams; Bacup having the better players but Montgomery playing the better basketball, whichever team took their chances was going to win. With a massive effort in the third quarter, the Bacup girls pulled the score back to within one basket, 27-29, but with so many missed shots and even more missed free throws (scoring only 6 from 27 attempts) the team failed to take the lead and control of the game.

Montgomery's free throw shooting was also keeping the game close as they only managed 5 from 22, but the tall Lauren D kept the points coming finishing second highest scorer on the day with 12.

Montgomery withstood the pressure and with Bacup having 3 of their 5 starters (Sophie Horrocks, Nansi Pallavus and Ellie Carrick) on 4 fouls and one fouled out (Simone Kelly) just couldn’t maintain the pressure. Most of these fouls were committed trying to control the oppositions very quick ball handler (Jade T), who was later awarded the MVP for her overall contribution to the game (top scorer with 13 points, excellent ball handling in offence, good defence).

The missed chances took their toll and Montgomery eventually finished the game with a 7 point advantage to become the first ever Lancashire Schools Basketball under 14 Girls Champions.

The Bacup team…
Katherine Parry, Sophie Horrocks, Nansi Pallavus, Ellie Carrick, Katie Bickford, Helen Marston, Sara Davison, Alix McDermott and Simone Kelly

The Montgomery team
Jade T, Charlotte H, Carly W, Lucy H, Emma S, Francesca N, Lauren D, June K, Fiona N, Suchita W, Lenny B

LANCASHIRE SCHOOLS BASKETBALL
Under 16 Girls FINAL
After a very close and hard fought (almost literally at times) game Worden became the first Lancashire Schools Under 16 Girls champions.
Final score Worden 32, Bacup 28.

The scores were level 14-14 at half time but then Worden opened up 7 point gap in the third quarter. Despite outscoring their opponents in the final quarter Bacup just couldn't close the gap.
However, the team played very well, especially defensively, and deserve a great deal of credit for their efforts and skill this year.

Rachel Ashworth, Nansi Pallavus, Emma Chapman, Joanna Doherty, Simone Kelly, Verity Postlethwaite, Emily Lester and Ellie Carrick.

With a full court defence pressurising the opposition and stealing the ball Bacup won the quarter 9-0 to win 17 points to 15. Darwen Vale await in the semi final.
