BRGS is a designated grammar school primarily for children who attend primary schools in Bacup, Rawtenstall and the surrounding areas. As a grammar school, our entire intake is selected on the basis of high academic ability.

 

We admit up to 180 students each year, based on their performance in our entrance examination, which is held each September. We hold an open evening in June to give parents and potential students the chance to look around the school before applying to sit our entrance examination.

 

Children must pass the entrance exam in order to be considered for a place. However, passing the examination is not a guarantee of a place due to our over-subscription criterion.

 

Open Evening

 

On Tuesday 14th June 2022 we are delighted to be able to return to having an Open Evening at the school. The school we be open from 6.30pm until 8.30pm when prospective pupils as well as their parents can come along to meet the staff and obtain information about the school. Our prospectus is electronic and can be found under the admissions page of our website. If you are unable to join us in the evening but would like to visit the school at work during the day, we will be conducting a tour of the school at 9.45 am - pre-booking is required by clicking herePlease be aware that there is no onsite parking available.  

 

Applications for entrance exam in September 2022, entry to Year 7 September 2023

 

We are very pleased that you are considering BRGS for secondary school and wish to take our entrance exam on 17th September 2022. Before applying to BRGS we would recommend you read through our 'Blue Book' which has some key dates for the process of applying to BRGS as well as a copy of our admissions policy for those joining us in the academic year 2023-24.

You will need to register for an account and then during the registration process please add your child or children at this stage. It is not possible to add them afterwards without contacting the school. Once you have registered for an account you will be sent an email from admin@applicaa.com which will allow you to log into your account and complete the registration process for our entrance exam. Please note that this entire process needs to be completed by 12 noon on Tuesday 21st June 2022. Any submissions made after this time will not be accepted.

Admissions appeals for entry to Year 7 September 2022

 

Parents are able to appeal to an independent panel if they wish to contest the fact that their child has not been offered a place at Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School for September 2022 start.

 

If you wish to make an appeal, you will need to do so online using the Lancashire City Council online appeal form. The process of appealing against an admission decision can be found here, the link to the secondary online appeals for is linked in the section titled “Submit an appeal”. Further guidance is contained within these pages however the guidance notes are linked here for your convenience.

 

School Admission Appeals will be conducted in 2022 either face to face, by video/telephone conference or on the basis of a written submission. The independent appeals panel will make that decision on how the appeals will be heard based on the government advice at the time and an appeals officer will share this with you after the deadline date of submission of appeals.

 

Appeal hearings will be held between 9th and 13th May 2022.  Our appeals are managed independently by Lancashire and they will contact you directly with the specific date and time of your appeal hearing.  The outcome of your appeal hearing will be communicated to you with 5 working days of the date of the appeal wherever possible.
