BRGS is a designated grammar school primarily for children who attend primary schools in Bacup, Rawtenstall and the surrounding areas. As a grammar school, our entire intake is selected on the basis of high academic ability.
We admit up to 180 students each year, based on their performance in our entrance examination, which is held each September. We hold an open evening each June to give parents and potential students the chance to look around the school before applying to sit our entrance examination.
Children must pass the entrance exam in order to be considered for a place. However, passing the examination is not a guarantee of a place due to our over-subscription criterion.

Appeal for Admissions, September 2021
Parents are able to appeal to an independent panel if they wish to contest the fact that their child has not been offered a place at Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School for September 2021. Some general information is provided here.
Appeals will be heard virtually. An essential form you need to send back to LANCASHIRE can be found here.

Appeal applications need to be submitted to school by 26th March 2021 in order for them to be scheduled for an appeal hearing.
Appeal hearings will be held between 10th and 14th May 2021. Our appeals are managed independently by Lancashire and they will contact you directly with the specific date and time of your appeal hearing. The outcome of your appeal hearing will be communicated to you within 5 working days of the date of the appeal.
