PSHCE

The PSHCE curriculum for Year 7 to Year 13 is set in the context of a wider whole-school approach to personal development and supporting pupils to be safe, happy and prepared for life beyond school.

It aims to:

  • prepare them to play a full and active part in society
  • support the development of important attributes in pupils, such as honesty, kindness, tolerance, courtesy, resilience and self-efficacy
  • proactively address issues in a timely way in response to issues as they arise in the school and wider community
  • enable pupils to make well-informed, positive choices for themselves
  • ensure pupils understand the steps they can take to protect and support their own health and wellbeing and are aware where normal variations in emotions and physical complaints end and health and wellbeing issues begin
  • ensure pupils know how to judge when they, or someone they know, needs support and where they can seek help if they have concerns
  • foster pupils’ awareness and understanding of democracy, government and how laws are made and upheld.
  • develop the knowledge to explore political and social issues, to weigh evidence, debate and make reasoned arguments
  • prepare pupils to take their place in society as responsible citizens, manage their money well and make sound financial decisions
  • support pupils to build positive and safe relationships to thrive understanding acceptable behaviours in relationships, and how to adapt as they mature (RSHE)
  • prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life
  • understand the importance of showing respect for the diversity and differences between people

The whole-school curriculum operates at three levels and addresses pupils’ academic, personal and social development. The three individual elements of learning provide a different component to the education of every pupil. Intellectual, personal and social maturity will be the goal of these structured layers of learning at the school.  There are three guiding elements which are brought to life in the PSHCE curriculum:

Educational excellence: teachers build the essential knowledge needed for pupils to be educated citizens that think critically, research, weigh evidence, debate political questions, and take action. They know how to keep themselves safe from harm.

Character development:  develops a pupil’s political agency, harnesses an interest and commitment to community volunteering and responsible action. They are able to develop and make sense of their rights and responsibilities as citizens of the United Kingdom and the world. They are able to make well-informed, positive choices for themselves. They understand the steps they can take to protect and support their own health and wellbeing.

Service to communities: pupils build up accurate knowledge about the political, social, legal, and economic systems the impact on our communities. This provides pupils with many of the ingredients for cultural and civic competencies needed to be active citizens.

Assessment

Formal assessment takes place at the end of each half term.
